I would be lying to myself & the world if I attempted to play down how much I adore shoes, whether it be my wardrobe necessities that are black boots and white sneakers, funky unconventional brogues or point toe suede heels….or those wonderfully wild shoes that I gaze at when walking past a store and have to remind myself that I’m 5.11ft and rather on the clumsy side, so unsure of how I would manage in heels that high *buys them anyway*. If you’re on the borderline of or just a completely over the border footwear obsessive such as myself and haven’t heard of Kathryn Wilson footwear – you’re missing out. The New Zealand footwear designer is a shoe celebrity here in NZ, after studying shoe design internationally, Kathryn made her return to New Zealand to launch her own (and very well loved) label. Kathryn has successfully established herself as a leading footwear designer and a highly influential business woman producing epic high in demand footwear which is worn by women all over the world. With footwear stocked in over 100 local boutiques assisted by a continually growing online market, Kathryn Wilson shoes are a fashion must have for Kiwi girls everywhere (myself included), I am currently drooling over the 406 Jaime Brogue, 507 Sue Trainer and the 506 Claire Loafer. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to send a few questions through to this footwear Queen who is aspirational for young women everywhere, including myself.
Can you tell us a bit about the Kathryn Wilson brand & its journey?
I launched the brand in 2003 when I was 23 and wanted to wear shoes that no one else was wearing… it made me realise there was an opportunity to make limited edition, hand-made shoes that were unique and playful. We now have over 100 stockists throughout NZ and Australia with the ‘Kathryn Wilson’ brand, our diffusion line ‘Miss Wilson’, ‘Baby Wilson’ and toddler collection ‘Little Wilson’ and three flagship stores in Auckland.
Biggest achievement so far?
Having Beyonce get a pair of our shoes and  posting a photo of them on her Instagram acc with 78 million followers and a pair of Little Wilson loafers for her daughter Blue.
Where do you get inspiration from?
Travel, friends, film, music, vintage stores…
What would be the most challenging thing about what you do?
Having lots of balls in the air at one time and being a master of all trades! Owning a small business requires you to work across all parts of the company.
What is the best thing about what you do?
Being passionate about the brand and the product and not feeling like I am going to work every day! Also… making so many women happy with beautiful new shoes to wear!
What are three pairs of shoes every girl should have in her wardrobe right now?
A classic ballet flat, a lace up brogue and a point toe mid height heel to wear with dresses and jeans
What advice would you give to those with similar goals?
Absolutely do it… follow your passion and don’t wait… whats the worst that can happen??…remember to laugh along the way and don’t sweat the small stuff…
What do you think of
love it! Of course! Beautiful imagery and great reading… really diverse coverage of shows, shoots and stories…congratulations on a year old!
