CULTURE MACHINE

If you haven’t heard of them yet, you need to jump on the band wagon ASAP. Culture Machine is a ‘new gen’ agency who seeks to discover and promote fresh and young talent and is run by fresh and young talents. I stumbled across their Instagram and spent so much time scrolling through all their unique and funky content that I am embarrassed to admit how long it was – but what I will tell you is that it was a *looks at time on phone and laughs because realises how long you’ve been lying on your bed scrolling*. They’re continuously giving light to upcoming, young labels and fresh faces, their innovative way of capturing and producing content is undeniably intriguing and inspiring for any fellow creative.
A happy happy Soph I was after getting to send a few questions to the team of young talents, be sure to have a read and follow them if you’re not already.

YASMIN

Screen Shot 2016-06-02 at 11.10.37 amWhats your name and whats your role at Culture Machine?
Yasmin. Founder and Creative Director 🙂
Who’s the funniest team member and why?
We love to laugh, and it’s one of the main reasons why we all can live and work together. Everyone has their own eclectic sense of humour. I’d say my brother, Kai @urmumsyadad is probably the most outlandishly funny!
Who/what is currently providing your inspiration?
Just last night I went to a lighting workshop hosted by Australian fashion photographer, Georges Antoni  at Sun Studios. Antoni was challenged to shoot a 6 page editorial in an hour on a cold and wet winter’s night. Watching him work, and think on the spot was incredible! And then speaking to him after the workshop was even more inspiring and motivated me to keep doing what I’m doing.
How was Culture Machine started?
Culture Machine started as a tumblr blog, created in a hotel room in Vegas on my first trip to the US in 2012. I was over for Coachella and had collected a bunch of photos throughout the trip and wanted to publish them somewhere.  On returning from the trip, I continued shooting and linking up with other creatives – stylists, hmuas, filmmakers etc – and really wanted to define my work as a group / collective effort. I started a series called the ‘Style Files’ in Sydney where I profiled a group of Sydney siders with their own sense of personal  – which is where I met most of the models / bloggers that I continue to work with now 🙂 I moved to Bali with my mum and developed Culture Machine into an agency, and started scouting and representing models. And now, I’m back in Sydney living with my best friends and boyfriend @kaleneville, and running Culture Machine from here.
Favourite thing in your wardrobe at the moment?
My Uni-Clo black turtle neck. I have an obsession with turtle necks. The weather is getting super chilly here in Sydney, so they’re my go-to for winter layers.
Coolest thing thats happened whilst working at Culture Machine?
So many rad moments. But I think the coolest thing about Culture Machine is that (touch wood) it gave me a pathway straight out of uni into freelance work, and I haven’t worked a 9-5 desk job since! I’m also really stoked that I’ve been able to get my friends work, and to work alongside the people that I really enjoy being around, and who inspire me. When we get hired for jobs we all work together, I usually shoot stills, my boyfriend Kale shoots video and / or 35mm film and we’ll usually book our models of the job as well (and sometimes our stylist and hmua). Walking onto set with a team of your best friends is the greatest feeling!
Favourite thing to have for breakfast?
Can’t go past vegemite on toast!
What do you think of sonderingg.com?
A great creative platform! I’m in love with the ‘WINTER BABY’ shoot. The model, Brandi is a mini-Kate Moss DREAM!

What’s your name and what’s your role at culture machine?
Hi I’m Kai. “I makea da memes” I actually don’t know my role I’m just Yassie’s brother
Who is the funniest team member and why?
This is very situational. Yas: the most terrible jokes that are so bad you have to laugh. Ask her about a lion and tiger. You’ll see. Luka: so weird. Like sometimes I think he needs help. Kale: does not care. Like people say they don’t care. Nup. He has prisonbitch tattooed on his thigh. Kath: quirky af.
Who/what is currently providing your inspiration?
World star hip hop. Ask my roomies.
How was Culture Machine started?
If I recall correctly, my sister was over in LA for Coachella with a bunch of people she didn’t fit in with so ended up having an epiphany in the hotel room while everyone was out doing shit she had no interest in.
Favourite thing in your wardrobe at the moment?
Lowe’s turtle necks, they go hard.
Coolest thing thats happened whilst working at Culture Machine?
I’m roommates with the sickest bunch of people ever! Minus Kath, but she pretty much lives here.
Favourite thing to have for breakfast?
Bondi Harvest. Caveman bowl, no eggs, add mushroom.
What do you think of sonderingg.com?
heaps of fash v nice.

LUKA

Whats your name and whats your role at Culture Machine?
My name is Luka Raubenheimer, my role at Culture Machine is… I don’t really know, we all kind of share creative roles.  One day, I’m in front of the camera for Yasmin and Kale, the next day, I’m sitting behind my computer editing a video. But basically, we all just live in a house, where we are all constantly planning ideas and helping each other to achieve them.
Who’s the funniest team member and why?
The funniest team member varies as well. Yasmin pulls these crazy faces when nobody is looking. It’s quite funny. Kale ‘says it how it is’, which can be very funny. Then he has these crazy bursts of enthusiasm, with a cheeky smile, he dances around the house. Kath shouts all the time, without ever realising. She wears a weird tweety bird shirt, and dances in front of everyone. Everyone is tired and she still has energy and maintains entertainment. But least we forget, Ur Mums Ur dad. Kai is very funny, he doesn’t realise how rude he is to people sometimes, its hilarious. Like in a debate with him. He always wins. Kind of Hollywood confronting comedy.
Who/what is currently providing your inspiration?
My current inspiration is Heath Ledger, Jim Jarmush, always been Steve Irwin and my two younger brothers, Sebastian and Timu. Work ethic inspiration is defiantly Yasmin Suteja.
How was Culture Machine started?
From my understanding, Yasmin started Culture Machine in a hotel room in Vegas. It started out as a photography blog. The whole Culture Machine crew that we have now, has only really been around for the last year. I woke up really hungover at Yasmin’s Villa in Bali almost 2 years ago now. She came out of her room and I was sitting by her pool, hungover and holding in my vomit!  She invited me back over with the friends I was with to do a shoot. So, two days later, there we are were Yasmin’s Villa. Sahara Ray and Mimi Elashiry lying on a mirror. Jake Vincent, Darcy Dineen, Kale Neville, Yasmin Suteja and myself – all shooting.
Now I think back on it, it was a great day. A really good day. Anyways, we all became good friends, then two weeks later, Jake Vincent and myself flew back to Australia to carry on our everyday lives. Kale said he was going to hang for a couple weeks longer. One day, I was sitting at home and it popped up on face book. Kale Neville is in a relationship with Yasmin Suteja. I called him and…. He didn’t come home for 2 years.  Within those two years, I went to stay and visit Kale and Yasmin in Bali plenty of times. They invited me to the USA for a Culture Machine road trip. Haha, that happened, it was the fucking best. Whilst we were travelling we decided to all meet in Sydney 2016. And now here we are.
Favourite thing in your wardrobe at the moment?
My favourite thing in my wardrobe right now, is my grey old grand dad pants for vinnes, probably 5 sizes to big for me, but with the help of a belt and a tucked in T shirt. They are great
Coolest thing thats happened whilst working at Culture Machine?
The coolest thing that has happened to me whilst working for CM, besides all the opportunities I’ve been fortunate enough to be exposed to, was this one time, when we went to a friend’s Ranch in the Californian dessert. I woke up, had shots to Vodka, shot guns, then crashed a quad with my friend on the back. Oh and the sky looked like it was opening up a window to another dimension.
Favourite thing to have for breakfast?
Favourite thing for breakfast, Brekky sandwich with no feta.
What do you think of sonderingg.com?
I like the simplicity of the Sonder blog. The black and white contrast, and the use of facial shadows on majority of the images.

KATH

Whats your name and whats your role at Culture Machine?
Kathleen Ebbs, I work for culture Machine as a model.
Who’s the funniest team member and why?
I feel as though everyone is funny in the there own strange way. Each member can make me laugh at different times for different reasons. Whether it be blunt humour (mainly coming from Claudia), the boys putting together some crazy skit, Yasmin explaining to us the encounter she had with a takeaway restaurant or Kale letting us know he is going to “eat the shit” out of his food, be sure there is never a dull moment and always someone to make me giggle.
Who/what is currently providing your inspiration?
hmm I find inspiration at random most of the time, which properly is not the best way to be. As I have started trying to get back into acting again I am finding picking up new and unknown scripts is keeping m on my toes, as well as watching unseen films. Though most of the time my inspiration comes from  the people around me. I am surrounded by a bunch of talented creatives 24 7 so it is hard to not be inspired as I look up to them all and admire everything they do.
How was Culture Machine started?
Yasmin is a bloody genius and took the bold move to follow her dreams.
Favourite thing in your wardrobe at the moment?
My high waisted dark green pants I bought at the markets a month ago.
Coolest thing thats happened whilst working at Culture Machine?
Shit it is hard to just mention one.The whole journey of how I got here with these people is a cool story in itself. I was swept up and took it upon myself to explore further. It was the best and “coolest’ decision I have ever made.
Favourite thing to have for breakfast?
smoothie bowls derrrh.

KALE

Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 9.56.46 am

Whats your name and whats your role at Culture Machine?
I’m Kale, yes I’m #trending. Roles ? I guess there isn’t as such, We are just a group of friends living each day from one creative hobby to the next. We all have our stronger and chosen fields, don’t get me wrong, Mine being filmmaking alongside the talented Luka. But we don’t classify who’s who. Although we all know Yas is the boss and it’s safe to say none of us would be even close to all of this if she didn’t manufacture this little machine.
Who/what is currently providing your inspiration?
Inspiration’s a hard one. it all depends on what the day has in store for me. Photography would have to be the quirkiness and context of Juergen Teller, Filmmaking varies daily from online artists like Pierre David to Feature filmmakers like Wes Anderson and Danny Boyle. I vibe on street art and paintings daily too. A lot of my inspiration for my work is derived from art I’ve seen before.
Who’s the funniest team member and why?
Each of the crew bring their own comedic roles to the table – weird, loud, clueless, energetic. That’s all there in this little house on Shneebly Street. So, the funniest person all depends on my mood. But with a name like “URMUMSURDAD” he usually takes the cake.
How was Culture Machine started?
So the story goes, Yasmin spent a night in after a long day of what probably consisted of taking a thousand photos, She sat there with her eyes glancing from fashion blog to facebook whilst other windows to the soul stared into the glowing lights and slot machines of Las Vegas. BOOM just like that, CULTURE MACHINE was born.
Favourite thing in your wardrobe at the moment?
Still and always will be my fathers leather jacket.
Coolest thing thats happened whilst working at Culture Machine?
After 2 and half years in Bali, a trip to the states and now all in one roof in Sydney Australia. The coolest thing would have to be that I got to meet these crazy creatures I now call my FREE RAD FAM.
Favourite thing to have for breakfast?
Breakfast favourites could be coffee and cigarettes 😉 or cereal and juice. ohh wait favourite thing? ummmm CRATE CAFE’S breaky plate and a pash pop to soften the load.
What do you think of sonderingg.com?
Sonderingg – I literally just glanced the home page, First impressions were appealing.

CLAUDIA

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 8.17.09 am

What’s your name and what’s your role at Culture Machine?
My name is Claudia Allison and I started as an intern at Culture Machine back when Culture Machine first moved back from Bali to Sydney. I just never left and so now I’m part of the team! Now I do marketing with Yas, which basically just involves sending out tons of emails and I also assist Yas on photoshoots.
Who’s the funniest team member and why?
Everyone in the team is absolutely hilarious, all in totally different ways. Luka normally gets me with his outfit choices, Yas comes out with hilarious one liners even though I don’t think she means to, Kale gets in these moods where he’s super happy and just runs around singing and calling everyone babe, Kath kills me with her dancing to our guilty pleasure techno music and when she belts out one of her favourite 80s bangers, and obviously Kai is killing it at the moment with his memes and skits. Never a dull moment.
Who/What is currently providing your inspiration?
Kanye West is always my number 1 inspo. He speaks his mind, creates amazing music and doesn’t care what people think which I love – even though he can be a bit of a loose unit. Another all time inspo is Tina Fey because she’s an absolutely boss ass powerful, hilarious woman and everything I aspire to be. Rhianna and Beyonce’s new albums are also currently giving me power to be the most boss bitch possible.
How was Culture Machine started?
From what Yas has told me she first started Culture Machine in a hotel room at the Venetian in Las Vegas while everyone else was out gambling or drinking or whatever it is you do in vegas – which is literally the coolest story ever!
Favourite thing in your wardrobe at the moment?
I have 2 favourite items at the moment – one is my pink Britney Spears jumper that I bought for $2 at glebe markets which has a collage of pictures of meltdown Britney and says ‘Britney Shears’ on it. The other is my pink wind-braker tracksuit that I bought for $12 at some op shop, although it is in need of some repairs at the moment as I split the whole back of the pants slut dropping before we went to El Topo last week…
Coolest thing that’s happened whilst working at Culture Machine?
It’s so hard to think of just one thing! Every day we are doing such new and interesting things and always meeting new people. If I had to pick my most memorable moment though it would probably be one of my first photoshoots at Culture Machine when we did the Love Story photoshoot in the city. Luka was looking particularly Leo DiCaprio this day and this group of teenage girls on a school excursion were all staring at Luka and giggling and with a bit of encouragement ended up running over to him and all getting selfies and photos with him. I was crying with laughter and they were all screaming – such a good moment!
Favourite thing to have for breakfast?
The poached eggs, smashed avo, goats cheese and quinoa on sourdough breakfast from Zeebra café at Maroubra beach, never disappoints.
What do you think of sonderingg.com?
I love the simple, clean layout of the website, and all the photoshoots look sick!!
